Continuous rain has left Dhaka University's Bangladesh Kuwait Friendship Hall and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall submerged, causing severe hardship for students.
On Friday afternoon, water levels around both halls reached knee-deep, sometimes rising to waist-deep from the gate to the rear. With no electricity and closed canteens, students in these halls are facing significant challenges.
Similar conditions are reported across other campus quarters, including Shahnewaz Hostel, Salimullah Muslim Hall, and Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall.
Nahida Siddika Papri, a student at Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, described the dire situation: the hall lawn is underwater, canteens and stores are flooded, and water has seeped into ground-floor rooms. The lack of electricity and fresh water compounds the misery for everyone.
At Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall, students noted a slightly less severe situation compared to nearby Maitri Hall, but electricity shortages and water scarcity remain critical issues. Ground-floor residents are especially hard-hit, with water entering some rooms.
University proctor Dr M Maksudur Rahman acknowledged efforts to address the crisis, including water drainage and supply.
Despite ongoing efforts by city corporation workers and hall staff, poor drainage infrastructure complicates water removal efforts. The university administration continues to work on resolving the waterlogged conditions affecting these halls, he further assures.
