DU students receive Bangamata memorial prize

On the occasion of the 89th birthday of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, a prize giving ceremony and seminar was held on Tuesday at Dhaka University’s Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib hall auditorium. Hall principal Dr Zakia Parveen presided over the event with university VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman as the chief guest. 

Pro vice-chancellor (administration) Prof Mohammad Samad and treasurer and trust fund president Prof Dr Md Kamal Uddin were present as special guests. Writer, researcher and Kushtia Islami University Bangabandhu chair Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan presented a speech titled ‘Kushumito Ishpat: Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib’. 

In his speech VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman expressed his respects to Bangabandhu and Bangamata. He said Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib played a role behind Bangabandhu becoming the greatest Bengali of all time. During Bangabandhu’s tumultuous political life, she gave her valuable advice and inspired him in all his activities. He urged students of this generation to follow in her footsteps to become upstanding citizens of the country. 

In his speech, Prof Shamsuzzaman Khan highlighted Bangamata’s morality and her character. He praised her humanity and her contributions to Bangabandhu’s political and personal life.

At the ceremony, Political Science major Shima Akhter was awarded the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib gold medal for her outstanding results in her undergraduate final exams. 6 female students from different departments were also awarded Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib merit scholarship. The scholarship recipients are Mst Jannatul Ferdous (Political Science), Shompa Das (Cultural Studies), Mim Jahan Tonni (Political Science), Tasneem Mosharraf (Tourism and Hospitality Management) and Farhana Akhtar (Geography and Environment).

A minute of silence was observed at the beginning of the programme to pay respect to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib and the other martyrs of 15th August. Afterwards, a publication in memoriam of Bangamata was unveiled.  The ceremony was conducted by the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib 89th birth anniversary committee convener residential hall teacher Prof Dr Shahana Nasrin.
