A group of female students from Dhaka University (DU) formed a human chain at VC Chattar on Sunday despite heavy rain, to demand full residential facilities for all students from their first year. The protest began at 11:30 AM with students from various departments joining in.
During the demonstration, one student expressed frustration, saying, "We are protesting for our legitimate demands. I have met with the Vice-Chancellor several times, but the university administration continues to give false promises. Even though classes are resuming, our demands are still unmet.”
The students criticized the administration, pointing out, “Dhaka University is a public institution that educates students from all backgrounds. How can a student from a lower-income family afford to live off-campus? The administration seems indifferent to the safety and well-being of those living outside. The seat crisis remains unresolved even after removing political influence. What are the hall authorities doing with the per capita allocation for students? Where is the accountability?”
They also highlighted the disparity in accommodation opportunities, stating, “At Dhaka University, both male and female students have access to halls based on merit. There are 5 halls for female students and 12 for male students . This clearly shows the administration's indifference towards the accommodation needs of female students.”
The students’ demands reflect a broader concern over the lack of adequate housing facilities and fair treatment for all students at Dhaka University.
