DU prepares to celebrate sbirth centenary

The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have chalked out elaborate programs on the occasion of university’s birth centenary and golden juvenile of the county’s great Liberation War.

President M Abdul Hamid, also the Chancellor of the university, will inaugurate the grand opening ceremony of the centenary celebration, to be held on July 01, 2021 on the campus.

Six international seminars, on different topics with well-established alumni of the university, noted educationists and researchers from home and abroad, will be arranged and it is expected that the Prime Minister, also former student of the university, will inaugurate the seminars on January 21 next year.

The information was unveiled on Thursday at a press conference at the Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus with university Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Md. Akhtaruzzaman in the chair. Pro-VC (Admin) Professor Dr Muhammad Samad, Pro-VC (Academic) Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, teachers and officials among others were present at the press conference. With the theme “Achieving sustainable goals and building a university suitable for 4th industrial revolution and creating skilled human resources”, the centenary celebration event focused on three basic things- improving quality of education and development of overall environment, basic practical research and publications, and strengthening the field of international cooperation.

The two fundamental books are ‘History of Dhaka University’ written by ProfRatan Lal Chakraborty and The Role of Dhaka University in making and shaping Bangladesh’ by Dr. Abul Kalam Azad Chowdhury. Princes Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise was invited to inaugurate the conference as special guest.

The elaborate programmes include formulating a master plan for ensuring quality education and expanding the area of research, publishing two fundamental books, modernizing the laboratories, organizing national and international seminars and conferences, setting up an centenary monument, issuing special souvenir, organising essay writing competition on “Dhaka University at centenary: achievements and expectations,” arranging cultural programmes, photography competition and publishing of poetry.

Besides, an international conference containing seven different seminars will be held in London from July12-14, 2021 with aims to develop alumni's views on higher education in Bangladesh and to develop collaborative agreements and relationships with eminent scholars, researchers and various European universities, especially of the United Kingdom (UK).

Dhaka University, which is considered as the country’s highest echelon for academic excellence, started its academic activities on July 1, 1921. It played a vital role in the country’s history. Its students and teachers sacrificed their lives in the 1952 Language Movement, 1969 mass upsurge and during the 1971 Liberation War.
