Dhaka University (DU) authorities are considering issuing identity cards to former students through the Alumni Association. This initiative aims to ensure alumni are not seen as outsiders when they visit campus. Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed this plan on Saturday.
On September 18, Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed announced efforts to keep the campus free of outsiders. This notification sparked discussions and criticism on social media, particularly from former students who expressed their concerns.
In light of this feedback, the university administration is revisiting the issue. Proctor Ahmed emphasised the importance of alumni, stating, “They are a vital part of the university worldwide and have ownership here.” He mentioned plans to request the Alumni Association to provide identity cards for alumni, allowing them easier access to campus facilities.
Additionally, Proctor Ahmed noted that the university is looking to address the issue of outsiders systematically. He explained, “We often deal with vagrants and individuals with mental health issues on campus, which has become exhausting.” The administration is in talks with relevant state institutions, including the Department of Social Welfare, to help remove these individuals and implement necessary support measures.
