Dhaka University (DU) observed the 43rd death anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on Tuesday. A Qurankhani was held after fajr prayers at the Masjidul Jamia on DU campus. DU students, faculty, officials and employees congregated at 7 am at the university’s Kola Bhaban. A procession, presided over by DU VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman was brought out afterwards to place a floral wreath at the poet’s gravesite.
Later a discussion event and musical performance was held near the poet’s burial site with DU VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman presiding over the programme. Nazrul researcher and Professor Emeritus Dr Rafiqul Islam, Treasurer Prof Dr Md Kamal Uddin and DU Teachers' Association president Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal delivered speeches at the event. Pro-VC (administration) Prof Dr Mohammad Samad, Registrar in-charge Md Enamuzzaman, university proctor Prof Dr AKM Golam Rabbani, music department chairperson Tumpa Somoddar and others were present. Bangla department chairman Prof Dr Bismadeb Chowdhury directed the programme.
In his speech, DU VC Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman said that poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was a poet for humanity. He believed in equality, communal harmony and enlightenment. He is responsible for inspiring the freedom movement. The father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur loved the poet and he honoured him with the title of National Poet. The VC also mentioned his contribution to Bengali society and culture and said that he will continue to inspire us for generations. Students and faculty members of the Music department presented musical performances at the event.
