The Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Sunday observed Mourning Day, commemorating the tragic deaths of students, employees and guests in a building collapse at the university's Jagannath Hall in 1985. A total of 39 people, including 26 students, died as the roof of the auditorium of the then Assembly Building (now October Smriti Bhaban) collapsed on this day in 1985.
The day's events began with a mourning rally from the foot of the Oborodhyo Bangla, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Akhtaruzzaman. The rally ended at the Jagannath Hall Memorial Monument, where participants laid wreaths and paid their respects to the victims.
Later, a discussion meeting was held at the TV room of the October Memorial Building of Jagannath Hall, presided over by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Akhtaruzzaman.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr.Md.Akhtaruzzaman, in his speech, said "We must learn from the tragic accident of October 15, 1985, and ensure the safety of all students and staff at Dhaka University. We must all work together to prevent such tragedies from happening again."
In the discussion meeting, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. A.S.M. Maksud Kamal, Treasurer Professor M.M.A. Mujtaba, President of Dhaka University Teachers Association Professor Dr. M. Nazmul Haque Bhuiyan, General Secretary Professor Dr. Zinat Hoda, Principal of Jagannath Hall Professor Dr. Mihir Lal Saha, former Principal Professor Dr. Asim Sarkar, General Secretary of Dhaka University Alumni Association Moulla M. Abu Kawsar, and others spoke.
The speakers recalled the tragedy and expressed their condolences to the victims and their families. They also urged the authorities to take necessary measures to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
