In response to student protests demanding an end to party politics, Dhaka University (DU) is forming a committee to guide decisions on political activities on campus. This follows the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, which was influenced by a student movement.
The university's syndicate, its highest policy-making body, met recently to discuss the future of party politics at DU. They decided to consult a committee of prominent educators to gather opinions on the issue. The details of this committee and its members will be announced soon.
Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan stated, “We are forming this committee due to the demand to ban party politics on campus.” He emphasised that until the committee completes its work, all party political activities will be suspended.
The committee is expected to include respected academics such as Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque and Professor Syed Manjurul Islam. They will gather input from campus stakeholders and provide recommendations on political activities.
A recent survey by the University Research Society revealed that approximately 84% of students support a complete ban on party politics, while 88% believe it is not essential on campus. Only 16% of students advocate for reform rather than a complete ban.
