Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Thursday said that more than 25 percent of afforestation will be created in the areas under the jurisdiction of Dhaka South City Corporation through the projects under implementation of the City Corporation and the planting activities of the Bangladesh Chhatra League(BCL). He said that Dhaka South City Corporation will achieve the target of 25 percent afforestation announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina first.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said this at the inaugural ceremony of the 'Tree plantation programme and sapling distribution programme' organised by the Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra League on Nagar Bhaban premises on Thursday.

Mayor Taposh said, 'Our forestry was below 10 percent. By implementing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's announcement, it has now reached 17 percent. But to combat the impact of global climate change, she has given us a target to increase our forest from 17% to 25%’.

‘I am strongly optimistic that Dhaka South City Corporation will be the first to achieve that goal through our ongoing projects and initiatives and with the united efforts of Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra League, we will be able to create more than 25% afforestation in Dhaka South City Corporation area, he added. At that time, the Mayor urged the leaders of the South Chhatra League to plant trees in Osmani Udyan and Panthakunja Udyan and on both sides of Adi Buriganga Channel, Shyampur, Jirani, Manda and Khalunagar Canal and said, 'Confirm afforestation there. Plant trees. We will make Dhaka city green. We will transform this city into a beautiful and green metropolis.

On the occasion, the mayor distributed saplings among the Student Affairs Secretary of Metropolitan South Chhatra League and Khilgaon Model College Chhatra League unit.

Later, he planted a sapling of Krishna on the premises of Nagar Bhaban.
