‘Drug trader’ killed in Cumilla ‘gunfight’

An alleged drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with police near Gumti River protection dam in Cumilla Sadar on Friday morning.

The deceased was identified as Jakir Hossain alias Kala Jakir, 36, son of Sultan Ahmed of Sashongaccha area in the upazila. He is accused in 17 cases.

On information, a team of police conducted a drive to arrest Kala Jakir around 2 am, said Mohammad Abu Salam Mia, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Jakir and his associates opened fire on the police, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Jakir was caught in the line of fire and sustained bullet injuries. Later, he was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. One LG, two bullets and 1200 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot.
