Ten sand fields were evicted by a mobile court from a three-kilometer stretch of Bhatiapara-Kalna road in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj on Thursday.
The mobile court conducted a raid at the sand fields on Bhatiapara-Kalna road for the second day on Thursday, as the sand fields were not set at a certain distance from the RHD road.
At that time, the mobile court fined 4 sand traders Tk 25,000. Besides, the RHD has started demarcating their roads. At this time 1,000 meters of sand pipe was destroyed.
Kashiani Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sabbir Ahmed said that local influential people have occupied the road space with the sand pipes for transporting sand brought in ships, constructing hundreds of illegal sand fields.
Due to this, the entire 3 km road of Bhatiapara-Kalna road became unusable due as well as traffic jams and accidents often happened on the road.
He added that the operation by the upazila administration will continue till the sand traders move the sand fields elsewhere. At the same time, the movement of sand carrying trucks on that road has been banned till next Eid. Meanwhile, Md. Zahid Hossain, executive engineer of the Gopalganj office of the Roads and Highways Department, said that if the owners of the sand huts do not movr beyond a certain distance and set their sand fields, the road will be damaged again.
Kashiani Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sabbir Ahmed, newly appointed Executive Engineer of Gopalganj RHD Md. Zahid Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kashiani Police Station Md. Azizur Rahman and others were present at the time.
