To curb polythene use, a nationwide operation against factories producing banned polythene shopping bags began on Sunday following the announcement by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
The Department of Environment (DoE) carried out the drive and conducted mobile courts in some parts of Dhaka city and other parts of the country.
The DoE conducted a raid in Kamrangirchar area in the city. During the drive, utility connections, including gas, electricity, and water,were disconnected at a factory.
Thirteen mobile courts were carried nationwide, targeting illegal storage and marketing of banned polythene.
A total of Tk 180,500 in fines was imposed on 26 businesses. Additionally, 746 kg of polythene and one truck were seized.
On the other hand, Syeda Rizwana Hasan held a meeting with environmental organisations at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
She announced that actions would also be taken soon against illegal battery-breaking and lead-smelting factories. She emphasized that the government is taking progressive steps to curb all forms of pollution to protect nature
