Former convener of Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chattogram city unit, Dr Shahadat Hossain, is set to take his oath as the mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) on November 3.

The Local Government Division scheduled the oath-taking ceremony on the morning of November 3.

The official concerned was asked to send the affidavit containing the property details of Shahadat Hossain to the Local Government Division within the next two days.

The information was provided through a separate letter signed by Mahbuba Irene, the Deputy Secretary of the Local Government Division.

In the letter, the Chief Executive Officer of CCC was asked to immediately inform if there is any court injunction or legal complication regarding the matter.

It should be mentioned that the election of CCC was held on January 27 in 2021. After the polling took place amid gunfire, clashes, and attacks, the returning officer declared the Awami League's candidate, Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, as the winner. At that time, BNP candidate Dr Shahadat Hossain rejected the election results, demanding the annulment of the results and a re-election. On February 24 of the same year, Shahadat Hossain filed a case against nine people in the election tribunal for rigging the election.

Dr Shahadat Hossain was declared the winner by the election tribunal as the mayor of CCC on October 17 this year. After that, the Election Commission published the amendment gazette, replacing former Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury.

When the local government division amended the notification on the removal of mayors on last Thursday, the legal barrier for taking the oath as mayor of CCC was lifted.
