Donor agencies keen to rehabilitate flood victims: Azam

Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Farooq-e Azam on Tuesday said donor agencies assured that they would provide assistance in rehabilitation process following the assessment of flood damage.

"We are approaching rehabilitation process from the stage of relief operations," he said, adding the work of estimating the damage caused by the flood is progressing fast.

Mentioning that various international organizations have come forward to assist in the rehabilitation of the flood victims, Azam said they have expressed keen interest in joining rehabilitation efforts.

He said: "They are interested in providing full assistance where they can help most."

He said this while addressing a press briefing after holding a meeting with the United Nations Coordinator in Bangladesh, ILO Country Director, IOM Chief of Mission, World Health Organization representative, WFP Deputy Country Director, UNICEF Deputy Representative, UNRCO Humanitarian Affairs Advisor at his secretariat office here, according to a press release.

When the delegation inquired about the ongoing flood situation, the adviser said, heavy rains and onrush of water from upstream to the country have resulted in flooding and a number of people have been left marooned in 11 districts, said the press release.

Seventy-one people have already died due to flooding, he said, adding, however, the flood situation is gradually improving.

Secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Md Kamrul Hasan and additional secretaries KM Ali Reza and KM Abdul Wadud, among others, were present.
