Everyone needs to be vigilant so that no parent has to live in an old age home in the latter years of their lives.
Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain made the comment while speaking as the chief guest at a conference organized by the Senior Citizens Welfare Society at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital on Monday.
“He said that children who are employed should not only support their parents financially but should also serve them and keep them involved,” he said.
The chief justice added that children would take care of their parents as well as grandparents.
Former Chairman of Bangladesh Press Council and Chairman of Senior Citizens Welfare Society Justice Mohammad Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed presided over the function.
The main highlight of the event was to pay homage to the heroic freedom fighters. A total of nine such people including former Army Chief Lt. J. M. Harun-Ar-Rashid were honoured with the Bir Pratik. The chief guest of the event unveiled the wrapper of the memorandum published by the society.
AKM Rezaul Haque, Convener of the Celebration Committee and Vice Chairman of the Society delivered the address of welcome on the occasion. Secretary General of the Society Engineer Md Fazlul Haque delivered the keynote address.
In his speech, the Secretary General highlighted the life and work of Bangabandhu, the background of the Liberation War and the context of the Liberation War and various aspects of the problems of the elders. In particular, he laid special emphasis on the Elderly Policy-2013 and the Parental Maintenance Act.
In his presidential speech, Justice Md Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed stressed on the importance of keeping the cost of healthcare of the country's elderly people at a tolerable level. He urged the government to keep the prices of daily necessities under control and expressed the view that all the organizations working for the service of the elders should conduct their activities in unison.
On the occasion, Dr Muhammad Amirul Islam, the patron principal of the society, offered prayers of gratitude and special prayers for the souls of all the martyrs of the liberation war including those of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.
