A documentary on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be screened 720 times on August 15 and 16 at Times Square, New York.
Times Square is the major tourist attraction brightly lit by numerous billboards.
Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday said showcasing Bangabandhu's life at the Times Square would elevate the brand value of Bangladesh in the international arena.
“We have been looking forward to getting an exposure at the historic Times Square and Empire State Building (in New York City) since long. Now we have the chance,” he said at the State Guest House Padma in the capital.
The initiative was taken as part of the ongoing celebration of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu.
A programme will also be held on August 15 marking the national mourning day at the Times Square which is sometimes termed as “heart of the world”, Dr Momen said.
Bangabandhu was killed along with the family members on the fateful night of August 15. Her daughters – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana – survived as they were abroad during that time.
The foreign minister hoped that the screening of the documentary would draw good international media coverage.
An expatriate Bangladeshi named Fahim, through his NY Dream Production (US based company), has taken the initiative while the Exim Bank and Anwar Group have provided financial support.
Times Square draws an estimated 50 million visitors annually while over 460,000 pedestrians walk through intersections at the midtown of Manhattan on its busiest days.
