A newly-released synopsis for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’confirms that the film will feature alternate realities. The film is directed by Sam Raimi and is the follow-up to 2016’s ‘Doctor Strange’. It is currently scheduled to debut in theaters on May 6, 2022.
‘Doctor Strange’ in the Multiverse of Madness’ will see Benedict Cumberbatch once again take center stage as Dr Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following supporting roles in several recent films. In the sequel, he teams up with Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) on a journey through the multiverse, seemingly to fix the damage done by Strange himself. This will see him face off against numerous mystical creatures, Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and even the evil Strange variant from Marvel's What If…?
Now, with only a few months until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness debuts, some new plot details about the film have officially been confirmed. In fact, Disney has released a new synopsis for the movie which confirms a journey through numerous alternate realities.
So, while the title and first ‘Doctor Strange 2’ trailer already offered hints at a journey through the multiverse, this synopsis confirms that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see the titular Marvel hero journey through alternate realities on his new mission. In his supporting appearance in last year's blockbuster hit, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Strange noted that even he still knows very little about the multiverse (and he could be considered Marvel’s biggest expert on the topic) so he will likely encounter threats unlike anything seen in previous Marvel films.
However, despite all of the weird cosmic insanity that Strange will likely encounter as he journeys through alternate realities, it seems that the stakes of the film may remain quite personal. Specifically, the trailers seem to be teeing up a showdown between ‘Doctor Strange’ and a variant of himself from another reality.
