An exhibition on rooftop agriculture will be organised under the initiative of Dhaka North City Corporation.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam made said this during a meeting on ‘Determining the qualification and selection process of rebate able roof gardening and formulating policies to prevent mosquito-borne diseases’ held at DNCC Nagar Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday.
DNCC Mayor said, “Dhaka does not have enough space for gardens or agriculture. Rooftops can be a great option for agriculture. Gardening on roof not increase the beauty and can be a source of fresh fruits and vegetables. It also combat with rising temperature.”
“Roofs can play a role in protecting the agricultural environment and preserving biodiversity. Many people are doing roof farming in Dhaka. To encourage them and bring more people under this initiative, we will organize an exhibition on rooftop agriculture,” DNCC Mayor added.
He directed the concerned department to take measures to organize the exhibition in the month of November.
The mayor also said, “Earlier I announced a 10 percent tax discount for roof gardens. Following our proposal, the ministry has approved tax exemption on planned roof gardens for all city corporations. Policies formulation with experts option is underway. City dwellers will get exemption from holding tax if policies are formulated regarding eligibility and selection process of rebate able roof gardening.”
Founder director and chief of News of Channel I Shaikh Siraj was present in the meeting.
He said, “Rooftop farming holds immense importance for city dwellers, bringing great joy and numerous benefits. Not only are people able to enjoy fresh, home-grown vegetables, but many are also reaping financial rewards from this practice. If the city corporation offer tax rebates for rooftop agriculture, it would be a honor for the residents.”
“An exhibition on rooftop agriculture is a fantastic initiative. I urge the City Corporation to organize area-wise exhibitions to promote and showcase the benefits of rooftop farming,” he added.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Mir Khairul Alam, Secretary Mohammad Masud Alam Siddique, Chief Engineer Brig. Gen. Md. Moin Uddin, Director of Agriculture Extension Department KJM Abdul Awal, were present at the metting.
