The failure to complete the 80-meter drain of Kazipara-Shewrapara has led to waterlogging and severe traffic congestion in the area. As a result, the plight of the people in the area is now at an extreme level. We will take immediate action.
This was stated by DNCC Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam while inspecting the site of the complication caused by the drainage part obtained from WASA in Kazipara-Shewrapara area on Friday.
It is to be noted that this drainage section of Kazipara-Shewrapara was transferred from WASA to DNCC in December 2020 and at that time WASA closed it without completing the work. Later, the work of the drain started with the own funding of the city corporation. Before the DNCC started the work, the contractor of the work obtained from WASA had filed a case and the Hon'ble Court granted stay there. As a result, the development work of DNCC drain in that part was stopped.
At the end of the visit, the mayor exchanged views with the journalists present.
During the exchange of views, the mayor said, "I came here today and saw that those who had worked in the past had left their used pipes, centering items, sandbags, wood and other items inside the drains. They did not clean them either. The drains are being cleaned by the City Corporation's engineering department and waste management department.
He said, "I have been here four times to alleviate the suffering of the people. I have spoken to Metrorail authorities and WASA more than once before. We have formed a quick response team. In case of waterlogging in any place, the quick response team will be there with their necessary equipment and will quickly remove the water and solve the waterlogging problem.”
Asked by reporters how long it would take for the drain to be completed, the mayor said, "You can see that the DNCC has made all the preparations for the work here. Pipes and other equipment have already arrived. Allocation of funds has also been made. I will be able to do this in a day. "
The mayor further said, "The entire four and a half kilometer drain from Taltola to Mirpur 10 has been completed. Not only this part of Kazipara in the middle has not been completed yet. "
Addressing the residents, he said, "While our cleaners and quick response team are cleaning the drains to remove the waterlogging, they are getting a lot of polythene, plastic waste and various other wastes. I urge the city dwellers not to dump such waste in the drains."
After exchanging views with the journalists, Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam visited a narrow road at Barek Mollah junction on 80 feet road in Mirpur. During the visit, he visited his landlord and talked to him about the purpose of widening the narrow road. At the same time, he requested the land owner to give up the land required for widening the road for the convenience of the city dwellers and the land owner would be compensated as per the law.
Also present on the occasion were DNCC CEO Md. Selim Reza, 13th Ward Councilor Md. Ismail Mollah and 14th Ward Councilor Md. Humayun Rashid (Johnny), Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md. Amirul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore SM Shafri Ul Islam, and other senior DNCC officials.
