Daffodil International University (DIU), in partnership with the Global Law Thinkers Society (GLTS), recently organized the "Pre-COP29 Group Discussion: Advancing Sustainable Living & Green Economy for Climate Action" at DIU’s Knowledge Tower in Daffodil Smart City, Dhaka. This event gathered academics, government officials, civil society representatives, and NGO leaders to discuss Bangladesh's role in global climate action ahead of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), set for November in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Dr. Mahfuza Parveen, DIU’s Director of Research and Associate Professor of Environmental Science, delivered the keynote speech, emphasizing DIU's achievements in sustainability education. She highlighted DIU’s top global rankings in THE Impact, QS World Sustainability, and UI-Greenmetric rankings, showcasing the university’s commitment to environmental consciousness and sustainable practices. Dr. David Dowland, Registrar of BRAC University, stressed the importance of youth engagement and social activism in climate action, while Ms. Raoman Smita of GLTS advocated for climate finance as a right, not a loan, underscoring the need for coordinated national policies.

The discussion included insights from Mr. Subir Kumar Saha of CDD, who called for nature-based solutions in disaster management. DIU faculty members, including Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir, shared initiatives on climate-resilient agriculture, while Mr. Khalid Md. Bahauddin addressed DIU’s waste management practices, setting an example for sustainability.

Through this event, DIU reaffirmed its commitment to the Paris Agreement goals, emphasizing collaboration to reduce emissions, promote sustainable development, and mobilize climate finance. The discussion highlighted DIU’s proactive approach in aligning Bangladesh with global climate action objectives, contributing meaningfully to sustainable progress.
