‘Discretionary power of land officers to be reduced’

Secretary of the Land Ministry Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, said that the entire land management is being brought under one Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) by reducing the "discretionary power" of land officials at the field level to reduce the chances of corruption. This will greatly reduce the chances of corruption of land service officials.

This was stated by the Secretary of the Ministry of Land Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman while addressing as a Chief Guest at a Shadow Parliament Debate Competition titled 'People's Participation and Good Governance in Land Management' organized by Debate for Democracy at FDC Auditorium, Tejgaon, Dhaka on Saturday. Chairman of Debate for Democracy Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran presided over the function.

In her speech, the land secretary said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had given 31 directions during her visit to the land ministry. The Ministry of Land under the leadership of Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury is implementing it today.

At the same time, the land secretary also said that for the convenience of the marginalized people of Bangladesh, the opportunity to apply for land registration by calling 16122 and land map and land development tax is also being created. There is no need to use smart phone or internet to get digital land service. Besides, the land deeds which are already in the government office need not be submitted separately in this manner. It will be easier to name.

The land secretary said the draft land crime law was almost finalized and would be open for comment soon. He also said that steps have been taken to amend the Land Survey Tribunal.

Responding to a question, the land secretary said that due to government policy, it is not possible to make land service hotline 16122 toll-free now. Because land issues are not included in emergency services.

Debates between Bangladesh Islamic University as the government party and Bangladesh University of Professionals as the opposition party participated in the debate competition held in accordance with proper hygiene rules. At the end of the competition, the land secretary distributed trophies and other certificates among the participating teams.

Professor Abu Mohammad Rais, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Environment Dharitri Kumar Sarkar, Senior Journalist BM Jahangir and Alamgir Swapan were present as judges in the shadow parliament debate competition. The president of the program acted as the moderator at that time. Students from different universities and their parents and media personnel were present among others.
