A culvert on the road from Nilkuthi to Kanchan Bazar area under Manda upazila of Naoagaon has collapsed and turned into a death trap for locals using that road. The culvert, which was broken almost two years ago, is constantly causing different accidents on the road for lack of reconstruction. As a result, the people of some nearby villages are suffering to travel around.
It is learned that the culvert on the paved road from Nilkuthi on the Naogaon-Rajshahi highway passing over Mirpur area at Refugejipara area has collapsed and turned into a dangerous pit.
Iron rods that were under the concrete have come out in an area of several feet of space. Locals say that even the slightest carelessness while crossing the culvert in the dark of night can lead to major accidents and cause fatalities. This road leads to Ganeshpur Union Parishad of the upazila. Every day innumerable service seekers go to the Union Parishad using this road.
Locals said the pothole has now become a death trap, since a part of the roof of the culvert had collapsed two years ago. As a result, the locals are making risky movements on the broken culvert every day.
There is a risk of casualties in the pit at any time. Therefore, they demanded the people's representatives and the local administration to solve the problem as quickly as possible and repair or rebuild the culvert.
Ganeshpur Union Parishad Chairman Hanif Uddin Mandal said, “The culvert on one of the main roads leading to Ganeshpur Union Parishad collapsed, disrupting traffic. As a result, the common people are in dire straits. This work has been tendered but I do not know why the contractor is not doing the work.” Morshedul Hasan, executive engineer of the upazila LGED, said all the official work including the tender for repairing the broken culvert has been completed. Necessary steps will be taken to get the job done in a timely manner.
