Diabetic patients may exceed 1.5cr in next year

World Diabetes Day today

The World Diabetes Day-2024 will be observed today (November 14) in the country with the globe aimed at building public awareness on the chronic metabolic disease.

This year’s theme of the day is “Diabetes: Our Commitment to Good Health”.

In 1991, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) declared November 14 as the World Diabetes Day and the day is being observed all over the world since 2007.

At the request of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, the government made proposal to the United Nations to observe the ‘World Diabetes Day’ on November 14 while was later unanimously adopted by UN General Assembly.

On the occasion of the day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus issued separate messages.

According to the IDF, about 42 crore people in the world are suffering from diabetes as one in every 10 adults worldwide has been suffering with diabetes.

Diabetes patients are increasing at an alarming rate in South Asia and the picture of Bangladesh is also dire.

According to Bangladesh Endocrine Society (BES), currently about 1.31 crore people are suffering from diabetes in the country making it eighth in the world.

It is feared that the number of diabetes patients, one of the four non-communicable diseases may exceed 1.50 crore by 2025.

At present, around 14 adults (20-79 years) are affected by diabetes in every 100 people in Bangladesh. One in every two people suffering from diabetes doesn’t know they have diabetes.

More than 20,000 children of 10-12 years age have diabetes in Bangladesh.

A diabetic patient dies in every 10 seconds, while two new diabetes patients are diagnosed.

The latest statistics and data of IDF Diabetes Atlas on the Global Impact of Diabetes showed that 53.7 million people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2021.

The number of people with diabetes is expected to reach 64.3 crore by 2030 and 78.3 crore by 2045.

Besides, 24 crore people with diabetes don’t know they have diabetes. Most of them have type-2 diabetes.

 More than 12 lakh children and adolescents (0-19 years) are affected by type-1 diabetes.

In 2021, 67 lakh people in the world died due to diabetes.
