An important and very busy road that commutes the capital city with Munshiganj district via Narayanganj is in a very deplorable condition for about one year. Specially, the large potholes created along the BSCIC industrial area and the south sides of Panchabati area under Fatulla police station were the causes of frequent accidents and a regular traffic congestion.
Commuters have been suffering seriously as the drivers of the speedy and small vehicles like taxi-cabs, CNG run auto rickshaws are reluctant to ply through this road on the plea of dilapidated road condition though slow, battery operated three wheelers were plying through the roads regularly.
The sufferer passengers complained that the covered vans over laden with cement were mainly damaging roads.
Patients who need to rush in the capital through ambulances for better treatment often fell into serious problem due to such dilapidated road condition.
This, nearly twenty-kilometre long road is badly in need of repair for a long time. For severe damages on various spots of the road, the road remained plunged under knee deep water after a rainfall. At night, transports tailback more than three kilometres long is often noticed and a passenger needs six hours to reach Dhaka from Munshiganj.
Incidents of accidents are regular phenomenon on this road. After the construction of Muktarpur bridge on Dhaleshwari river under Munshiganj district, this road has turned very busy for plying of all types of vehicles.
Everyday thousands of people of Munsiganj and Narayanganj districts made journey on this road for an easy access with the capital city.
But due to deplorable condition, the road has now become a fatal trap. Traffic congestion on the road is also created at Pagla-Munshikhola area due to haphazardly parking of hundreds of old trucks. Fatulla model police station officer in Charge Aslam Hossain told the Bangladesh Post if theses old (model out) trucks do not ply through Pagla area, people and vehicles would move with ease through the road.
It is learnt, two times in last one year this road was repaired by dumping only bricks and pebbles inside the potholes which has made the road condition further worse.
Five small bridges on this road from Panchabati area under Fatulla thana of Narayanganj to Muktarpur area under Munshiganj district are also in deplorable condition because often those bridges are collapsed due to plying of over laden trucks and vehicles through over those.
It is alleged, thousands of trucks, covered vans laden with heavy cement bags of Shah cement factory, Crown cement, Emirate cement and Primer cement are plyed through the road every moment. These vehicles were damaging the roads. Some commuters opined that plying of vehicles carrying cement through the road should be prohibited.
Traffic Inspector of Narayanganj Abdus Sattar said, they have nothing to do as the road is maintained by the Department of Roads and Highways . He further said, the traffic department faced an awkward situation when over-loaded vehicle is stuck in a road-pothole and creates traffic congestion.
Foysal Ahmed, a resident of Dewanbari area beside Dhaka-Munshiganj road said that a covered van of cement factory carries 20-30 metric tonnes of load and the road vibrates as an impact of the movement of the vehicle.
Nahid Sumon, a Sub-inspector of Fatulla model thana said, when they are assigned for a night duty in this road area at night, they have to waste time to decongest the traffic. He added that most of the transports at night plied with heavy load.
While this correspondent tried to contact with Roads and Highway officials in Narayanganj through phones, no one received the phones to make a comment on such a dilapidated condition of the road.
