The Dhaka Folkfest, which had been on hiatus due to security concerns, is making a comeback this year under a new administration. This year’s festival will not be held in Dhaka but will take place at Tanguar Haor, running from today, September 13 to 18.
Organised by local marine tourism entrepreneurs, the festival will be themed "Matir Gondhe Bhatir Gaan" and will offer a unique experience. The stage will be set in the middle of the Haor, with performances accessible from boats. Only tourists staying on registered houseboats will be able to attend.
The lineup features performances from notable bands like Krishnopokkho, Apon Ghor, Probar Ripon of Shonar Bangla Circus, Sohag Srabon, and Sohan Ali of "Chol Dotong Pahar." The festival also showcases local folk musicians and performers from the naval tourism community.
Masuk Ur Rahman, a co-founder, said to the media, “The festival aims to blend folk music with the natural beauty of Tanguar Haor and moonlit nights. It coincides with the death anniversary of Baul legend Shah Abdul Karim on September 12 and the full moon on September 17.”
He added, “This event, held in the Bhati region known for its water and moonlight, will be an annual tradition celebrating folk music and Baul legends. The Haor region, birthplace of artists like Hason Raja and Shah Abdul Karim, will continue its legacy of rich folk music.”
