Dhaka faces risk of up to 8-magnitude earthquake, warns State Minister

The State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md. Mohibbur Rahman has warned that Dhaka city could experience an earthquake with a maximum magnitude of 8. He cautioned that such a quake could destroy up to 20 percent of the city's buildings.

Minister Rahman shared this information during the 'BSRF Dialogue' organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) on Wednesday.

“There is no reason to fear,” he assured. “Many countries face similar threats. For example, Turkey recently experienced an earthquake, but their disaster-resilient infrastructure and social systems helped them manage the situation effectively.”

He noted that dealing with Cyclone Remal was a significant challenge, but it was managed in a planned and coordinated manner. “Not a single fisherman died, and no boats sank. Disasters can strike at any time, including tornadoes and floods. We lost three people in landslides in Sylhet, and our ministry works around the clock throughout the year to address these issues,” Rahman said.

The minister emphasised the importance of preparing for earthquakes by creating a large volunteer force in urban areas. “We have extensive plans to clear debris and rescue people if buildings collapse.”

He stressed the need for national awareness about disaster preparedness, especially for earthquakes. “Bangladesh is among the earthquake-prone countries, and a magnitude 8 earthquake could trap millions in Dhaka.”

When asked about the basis for his warning, Rahman stated, “I have made these statements based on specific research and information we have gathered.”
