Bangladesh and India have reviewed the progress of bilateral relations on the sidelines of the connectivity conference in Tashkent when the two foreign ministers met.

“Happy to meet with Bangladesh FM Dr AK Abdul Momen on the sidelines of the Tashkent Connectivity Conference. A good opportunity to review the progress in our ties, including its connectivity aspects,” Indian external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting on Thursday.

The Bangladesh foreign ministry in a statement said Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen had a meeting with his Indian counterpart at the sideline of the International Conference on “Central and South Asia: Regional connectivity. Challenges and opportunities”.

They discussed a range of issues including the bilateral and regional connectivity, Covid and vaccination situation in both the countries, the issue of repatriation of the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals temporarily staying in Bangladesh (the Rohingyas) as well as the cooperation of both countries in various international fora.

Dr. Jaishankar expressed his happiness as the supply of vaccination to Bangladesh is back on track from diversified external sources including under COVAX arrangement, the foreign ministry said.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the partnership and expanding multifaceted cooperation.

They also emphasised the need for resuming the activities of various joint mechanisms soon after the covid scenario in both countries improves.

The foreign minister also met with his Tajikistan counterpart Sirojiddin Muhriddin.

He proposed to initiate a joint working commission to boost bilateral trade and investment.

Muhriddin expressed his country’s appreciation to Bangladesh for graciously hosting the persecuted Rohingya people and pledged to continue to support Bangladesh in its multidimensional efforts to repatriate the displaced Rohingyas, said the foreign ministry.
