Dhaka city tops coronavirus patients’ home

The capital Dhaka city tops the list of the residential details of the coronavirus patients in Bangladesh, followed by Madaripur.
Most of the 33 patients are at their very productive age between 21 years and 40 years. Two third of them are men. Thirteen of all patients returned home from abroad and the rest came to the contact with them.

Director of the government disease monitoring arm, IEDCR, Prof Meerjady Sabrina Flora in an online briefing on Monday shared few details of the confirmed 33 cases in Bangladesh. Three of them died.

After analysing those details, Bangladesh Post asked her whether any conclusion can be drawn with that. For that, she, however, said more samples would be needed.

“We just tried to see the distribution and details of the patients. We cannot draw any conclusion with such small samples (33 patients). We’ll be able to do (conclusion) that when we have more cases,” she told Bangladesh Post.

“Most of them are men because all of the infected expatriates were men. It’s not that we are saying that men are more vulnerable than women,” she said, adding that: “in future we’ll give more specific even upazilla wise information”.

Of the total, 33 patients, the IEDCR found 15 from Dhaka city and 10 from Madaripur. Besides, three patients were found in Narayanganj, two in Gaibandha, one each in Cumilla, Gazipur and Chuadanga. Three patients died.

Among the 33 patients, two are below the age of 10 years, one in the age between 10 to 20 years, nine in between 21 to 30 years, nine from 31 to 40 years group, five from 41 to 50 years, one from 51 to 60 years and six persons are over 60 years old.

Of them, 13 returned from abroad and 20 persons somehow get into their contact. Of the 13, six came back from Italy, two from European countries other than Italy, two from the United States, one each from Bahrain, India, and Kuwait.

Eleven of them have co-morbidities that means they are suffering from other diseases Most of them are stable now. One is in critical condition since that person is suffering from kidney diseases. Dialysis is going on, she said.

Five went back home after full recovery, Prof Flora said.

The IEDCR so far tested 620 samples for the COVID-19 patients.

Till Monday, 51 people are in isolation either with the diagnosis of coronavirus, or with symptoms. The government kept 46 people quarantined in different places.

The IEDCR urged all to maintain social distancing and stay at home and wash hands frequently with soap and do not touch mouth, nose, face and eyes in unwashed hands.

People have been asked to maintain cough etiquettes such as covering cough and sneezes.

The government on Monday declared closure of all offices and courts from March 26 to April 4. Army has been called in to help the district administration from Tuesday.

The government earlier warned people of staying at home. All educational institutions have been closed till March 31.
