Locals formed a human chain beside the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in Kabirpur area of Savar on Friday to save a 69-year-old playground.

The protesters held banners and placards, protesting the move of a government institution to set up a training centre on the playground.

The protestors said people have been using the 215-acre fields since 1960 but a government institution has recently acquired to set up buildings there. They said that they wrote to various departments of the government to save the playground but no to avail. So, they took to the street.

“We have no other option but to protest. There is a high school, three mosques and two madrassas in this village. At least 50,000 people in the area use the field for sports, Janaza, and religious purposes,” said Farid Hossain, a local.

“So, we are demanding to save the playground,” he added.

Mazharul Islam, Savar upazila Nirbahi officer, said that none complained about the acquisition of the field.

“If the locals come, I will see the matter,” he added.
