The police discovered the half-decomposed body of a 72-year-old man named Nazmul Hasan in a house in Bijoynagar, the capital.
Ramna police recovered the body around 3:30 pm on Wednesday. It was later sent to Dhaka Medical College (DMC) hospital mortuary for autopsy.
According to Nazmul Hasan's younger sister, Shamima Nargis, the house in Bijoynagar belongs to their family, but Nazmul Hasan lived there alone as he was unmarried. Nargis last spoke with him on May 9, when he complained of feeling unwell due to the heat. She attempted to contact him the next day but couldn't reach him.
On Wednesday morning, when Nargis went to the house from Uttara, she found the door locked and noticed a foul odour emanating from inside. Upon informing the police, they broke down the door and discovered Nazmul's body.
Nargis stated, "We believe he passed away a few days ago, possibly due to the heat or some other illness. As he had no relatives with him, his body had started to decompose."
Ramna police sub-inspector (SI) Sujan Chandra reported that the old man's body was found inside the two-story house at road no-7 in Bijoynagar. The body was lying on the bed, severely decomposed and infested with insects.
An investigation is underway, he assured.
