Death penalty for killers demanded

Three youths have been arrested in connection with the murder of Bulbul, a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) following a series of raids by police across the campus and its adjacent areas.

The arrestees are Kamrul Islam, 22, Abul Hossain, 18 and Mohammad Hassan, 18.

Earlier on Tuesday police detained three persons including Abul Hossain who gave confessional statement to the police that he along with Kamrul Islam and Mohammad Hassan were involved in the killing.

Police also recovered Bulbul’s cell phone and the knife used in the killing from Kamrul’s house in Tilagaon area adjacent to university campus.

Bulbul Ahmed, a third year student of the Public Administration Department of the university was stabbed to death by a gang of miscreants on the campus on Monday evening.

“They all three were arrested on Tuesday night and they are outsiders. At first we nabbed Abul Hossain. And based on his information, we raided the area and arrested Kamrul Islam and Mohammad Hassan,” Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Deputy Commissioner Azbahar Ali Sheikh told reporters at a press briefing on Wednesday.

He said Bulbul along with his girlfriend went to the Gazi Kalur Hill widely known as a piece of New Zealand area of campus, adjacent to the Shaheed Minar on the campus.

“When Bulbul and his girlfriend were staying there, Kamrul, Abul and Hassan swooped on Bulbul and tried to take away his mobile phone set and money bag.  And there was a scuffle between Bulbul and the muggers. At one stage, Kamrul started stabbing Bulbul indiscriminately. As Bulbul fell down on the ground, the criminals fled the scene leaving him critically injured,” the SMP Deputy Commissioner added.

After sometimes Bulbul’s friends found his blood-soaked body lying down on the hill.

“They rescued him and rushed to the university medical centre from where Bulbul was shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where on duty physician pronounced him dead around 7:45pm,” Azbahar Ali Sheikh said.

Hailing from a village in Narsingdi district, Bulbul was a resident of Shah Paran Hall.

Replying to a query, Azbahar Ali Sheikh said the goons’ motive was to snatch mobile phone, money bag and other belongings from Bulbul.

Asked whether Bulbul’s girlfriend did have any connection with the murder, the police official said, “Initially, we didn’t get any clue in this regard. However, we will keep you updated in this connection,” he said.

The police official said Bulbul succumbed to his injuries due to profuse bleeding.

Police also interrogated Bulbul’s girlfriend, a first-year student who was with him at the time of the attack.

The law enforcers also took her to the spot of the attack in order to investigate the incident.

According to Bulbul’s girlfriend, three masked men came and stabbed Bulbul.

They also brought out procession and staged demonstration on the campus demanding of the authorities of SUST to take tight security measures in and around the campus.

They also demanded tightening access to campus at night and increase the number of closed-circuit TV camera on the campus.

Additional security guards will also have to be deployed around the university area and strengthen surveillance considering the latest situation, they said.

The university authorities announced taka five lakh assistance for the bereaved family of Bulbul, promising that SUST would always stay with them.

SUST Vice Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed on Wednesday sought cooperation from all teachers, students and employees to ensure the safety of the university campus.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened at death of our student Bulbul. We will do our best to ensure the safety of the university campus. Security guards will also be deployed around the campus especially, in vulnerable area,” he said.
