Zia Rahaman, Professor of Criminology Department of Dhaka University and Dean of Social Science faculty passed away. He was 58.
He died at Labaid Hospital in the capital around 4:15 am on Saturday.
Confirming the death, DU Proctor Prof. Maksudur Rahman said he died in the early hours of Saturday due to brain haemorrhage while undergoing treatment at the capital's Labaid Hospital. Prof. Zia Rahman's janaza was held at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University after Zuhr prayers, said family sources.
He was laid to eternal rest at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard following the second Namaz-e-Janaza after Asr prayers.
Zia Rahman, who was also founder chair of the Department of Criminology, left behind his wife.
Prof Zia Rahman began his teaching career as a Lecturer and Assistant Professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology before joining
Dhaka University's Department of Sociology as a faculty member in 1997. He also served as a Board Director of the International Society of Criminology and the Director of the Centre for Advanced Research in Social Sciences at Dhaka University.
From 2013 to 2020, he led the university's Department of Criminology as its founding Chairman.
