Dealer held with 116 sacks of rice in Shahjadpur

Police have seized 116 sacks of of government rice from a warehouse in Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj. The battalion on Monday also detained Alauddin, a dealer of the government's food friendly programme at Kaijuri Bazar, on the allegation of storing rice illegally.

Earlier, police recovered 357 kg of rice from the house of a neighbour of the same dealer. Shahjadpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shah Shamsuzzoha said, “Based on a secret information, we conducted a drive at his personal warehouse in the evening and seized the rice.” 

A four-member committee led by UP Chairman Saiful Islam has been formed to investigate the incident. The other members of the committee are Upazila Food Inspector Raushan Ali, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Mahatab Hossain and Kaijuri Union Secretary Mohabbat Hossain.

The UNO further said that after the appointment of a new dealer, arrangements will be made to sell the rice to the card holders at a rate of Tk 10 per kg.

Meanwhile, the locals have expressed extreme anger over making the UP chairman as the head of the investigation committee. They demanded the immediate removal of the chairman and the formation of a new committee.
