‘Daughters’ growth have to be ensured from family’

Opportunities have to be created from the family for the development and growth of girl children,” said Sayedul Islam, Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs. 

He said that if daughters get the support of their parents in the family, there can be no obstacle in their education and development.

The secretary made the remark while speaking as the chief guest at a function on the occasion of National Girl Child Day, organized by the Department of Women's Affairs at Eskaton in Dhaka on Thursday.

Secretary Md Sayedul Islam said the family is the place where the child is most protected and her rights are ensured, but the discrimination against the girl child starts from the family. “It is possible to eliminate all such discrimination against a girl child by abandoning the patriarchal mindset,” he said.

He further said that every girl child has immense potential. They can perform their duties more efficiently if given equal opportunity. Honorable Prime Minister and Speaker of Bangladesh are women. Besides, women are holding high positions in the country.

Director General of the Department of Women's Affairs Ram Chandra Das presided over the function. 

Chairman of the Jatiya Mohila Sangstha Chemon Ara Tayyab, MD of Jayita Foundation Afroza Khan, Executive Director of Jatiya Mohila Sangstha Sakiun Nahar Begum, Additional Secretary Dr Mohiuddin Ahmed, Additional Secretary Mohammad Muhibuzzaman and officials of various ministries and departments were present during this time. 

Director General of the Department of Women's Affairs Ram Chandra Das said, “In the developing Bangladesh of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina there is no opportunity to discriminate against women and girls. Equality will be established through women's empowerment.”

At the end of the discussion, prizes were distributed among the children participating in the composition and drawing competition on the occasion of National Girl Child Day.
