Cyclone Remal severely damaged roads, houses, croplands, trees and ponds at Mirzaganj in Patuakhali on Monday.
Rain with gusty wind started on Sunday night and was continued until Monday afternoon. The normal life of the people of the Upazila was disrupted due to the stormy weather and heavy rain. The day laborers were the worst sufferers as they could not go out for continuous downpour.
Several thousand trees were broken. Moreover, many trees were uprooted and fell on many houses. However, no casualty was reported so far due to the cyclone in the Upazila.
The water level of Payra River and Srimanta River rose to three to four feet than the normal level and flooded road in front of Upazila Land Office, Subidkhali Bazar, Chailabunia and many other low-lying areas of the Upazila.
Many roads, including Barishal-Subidkhali-Barguna highway and other regional highways, were inundated due to the stormy weather. Vehicular movement was also halted due to the bad condition of the road.
The cyclone left more than hundreds of thousands of people without power for 16 hours since Sunday evening. People of Mirzaganj Upazila faced immense sufferings due to the interruption of electricity. The authorities concerned said the power connection will be restored when the storm will calm down.
According to Upazila Administration, more than 2,000 people along with their cattle took shelter at 58 shelter centers of Mirzaganj Upazila.
Nuruzzaman, resident of East Subidkhali, water is everywhere outside. My fishing trawler capsized. My fishing pond and cropland were also damaged. The cyclone is more dangerous than other previous cyclones.
