Cyclone fear has gripped people in coastal areas of Satkhira district as the water levels of nearby rivers have risen due to the impact of severe cyclonic storm Remal on Sunday.
People in many areas of the district are passing days amid fear and anxiety due to risky and damaged embankments.
Meanwhile, due to the impact of cyclone Remal, gusty winds started blowing along with light rain in coastal Shyamnagar, Ashashuni and Kaliganj upazilas of Satkhira from Sunday morning. Many people in the coastal areas moved to safe shelters due to cyclone fear.
Locals said the tide started in the coastal rivers on Sunday morning. The tidal water increased by three to four feet above normal since Saturday. However, the rivers have not taken a turbulent form so far.
Ashashuni Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rony Alam Noor said 107 cyclone shelters have been prepared by the upazila administration to evacuate people from vulnerable areas and around 13,000 residents have been taken to shelters.
Monirul Islam, executive engineer of Water Development Board Division-2, said more than 15 points of embankment under his division are at risk. Work is going on at 5/6 points. Sufficient geo bags and geo rolls are stocked. “Now we are doing geo roll work on embankment at break point of Bichhat village in 7/2 polder. He said that work would be carried out at all the points gradually.
