The standing Aman paddy in Ulipur upazila of Kurigram were damaged due to the gusty wind caused by the Cyclone ‘Dana.’ Moreover, there is a possibility of extensive damage to the Aman paddy of the upazilla.
A large amount of Aman paddy in 13 unions and one municipality of the upazila were damaged by the gusty that battered the area from Thursday morning to Friday afternoon.
According to the sources from Upazila Department of Agricultural Extension, among the total agricultural land in the upazila, crops in five hectares of land were damaged by the cyclonic storm. However, this is only the initial estimation. The extent of damage to crops caused by the storm is, in reality, much greater. Habibur Rahman, a farmer of Rajaram area of Ulipur upazila, said his aman paddy in one and a half acres of agricultural field was damaged due to the gusty winds. The damage paddy will rot in the field, incurring only loss for him. He also said that he will face a loss of Tk 50,000 as a result.
Subhash Chandra and Bhola Miah another farmer of that area said their crops in one bigha of land were damaged by the gusty wind. Ulipur Upazila Agriculture Officer Mossarraf Hossain said according to the initial assessment, Aman paddy in five acres of land were damaged by the storm. He also said that the amount of damage could not be determined fully till now. Our Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officers are working at the field level to assess the real loss.
