Curbing marine pollution a must for keeping sea clean: Speakers

Researchers fear that marine pollution will become serious due to the use of excess plastic products. For this, emphasis has been placed on controlling the use of plastic. Marine researchers report that hundreds of tons of non-biodegradable plastic used by humans are entering the ocean. In the future, more plastic than fish will end up in fishermen's nets. Everyone should be aware of the health of the ocean. The health of the ocean must be maintained. Only then the potential of blue economy can be exploited.

On the occasion of 50 years of marine science education and research in Bangladesh, the discussants said the above in a seminar jointly organized by the Bangladesh Ocean Res

earch Institute and the Department of Oceanography of Chittagong University.

The seminar was held on Saturday morning at the conference room of Bangladesh Ocean Research Institute located at Ramur Pachhar Island in Cox's Bazar.

Chittagong University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. was present as the chief guest in the seminar. Shirin Akhtar and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. were present as special guests. Benu Kumar Dey.

In the event, the keynote speech entitled "Maritime Education and Research in Bangladesh: Achievements, Challenges and Way Forward" and "Bangladesh Maritime Governance" was presented respectively by Director General (Additional Secretary) of Bangladesh Institute of Marine Research Syed Mahmud Belal Haider, Secretary of Maritime Affairs Unit of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rear Admiral (retd. ) Md. Khurshed Alam.

The researchers said, in order to exploit the potential of the blue economy in the Bay of Bengal, every citizen of the country needs to build a sea signature. The sea should be kept free from pollution.

In the seminar, the president of Chittagong University's Oceanography Department, Prof. Mohammad Moslem Uddin, Chittagong University's Professor (Retired) Scientist Dr. Nani Gopal Das, Chief Scientific Officer (retired) of Sparse, Obaidul Quader, BFRI Chief Scientific Officer (retired). Shyamlendu Vikas Saha spoke.

The seminar held on Saturday was attended by the teachers and students of marine science department of various universities of the country including Chittagong University, high level officials of the research government and representatives of various classes and professions.
