The seasonal market of cucumbers has accumulated in the rush of Sirajganj. Cucumbers from this region are in demand all over the country. Meanwhile, the farmers are seeing profit as the price of cucumber is good. As a result, the farmers now have a smile on their face.
According to Tarash Upazila Agriculture Office, cucumbers have been cultivated in 439 hectares of land in the current season. Which is 75 hectares more than last year's target level. Seasonal market has been established in Digharia village of Tarash upazila, focusing on cucumber every day. Wholesalers from different parts of the country including Dhaka and Bogura come and buy cucumber in this market every day.
It is known that in Kohit, Sarabari, Talam Satpara, Sachandighi, Sanduria, Khosalpur, Baruhas, Namo Silot, Dighuria, Diarpara, Khaspara, Tentulia, Kshirpota, Bargram area, field after field of cucumber has been cultivated in Tarash upazila. Seasonal traders have set up stalls in Digharia area to sell cucumber. Every day from dawn, farmers from different villages start harvesting cucumbers. And wholesalers from different districts including their own district came to buy cucumber. Hundreds of metric tons of cucumbers are being traded every day. Truck loading started after noon. Later, the truck moved to different areas of the country including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong. Now about 35 to 40 tons of cucumbers are going to Dhaka every day from these factories. Karim Uddin, a cucumber farmer of Kusumbi village of Baruhas Union, said that last season I cultivated cucumber on 6 bigha of land. Didn't see much profit due to the weather. This time I cultivated 10 bigha of land. Yields have also been bumper. I got the price very well.
Farmer Fajr Ali, a Barga farmer of Digharia village of Baruhas Union, said that last year he made a good profit by selling cucumber. This time too the yield has been very good and the price is also good.
Hussain Ali, farmer of Sandra village of the same union, said, I have been cultivating cucumber for three years. Earlier this plantation was less. But the interest of the farmer is increasing every year due to higher profit in cucumber cultivation than other crops.
Majnu, a farmer of Digharia village in the upazila, said that besides paddy cultivation, this year we cultivated cucumbers on two and a half bigha land. About 100 to 120 mounds of cucumber will be produced per bigha of land. In the current market, cucumbers are being sold at the rate of Tk 1100/1200 per bag. If the market price is like this, 38 to 40 thousand rTk will be earned on two and a half bigha land.
Chairman of Baruhas Union Parishad Moinul Haque said that wholesalers from different districts come to buy cucumber from Digharia Art in trucks.
Khira of the area usually goes to different areas of the country including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong. Hundreds of metric tons of cucumbers are being traded every day.
Cucumbers produced in a hurry are going to different areas of the country including Dhaka. From this year, 45 to 50 tons of cucumbers are going only to the capital Dhaka every day.
Tarash upazila agriculture officer agriculturist Abdullah Al Mamun said that cucumber cultivation is very good in the cropland of the upazila. The people of the agriculture office have been supporting the farmers all the time by encouraging and helping them in cucumber cultivation. Farmers can earn better profit in cucumber cultivation than other agricultural products.
