A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the University of Chittagong and the Confucius Institute of Dhaka University to set up a Chinese teaching center at the Confucius Institute of Chittagong University.
Chittagong University CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shireen Akhtar and Dhaka University China Confucius Institute Director Yang Hui signed the agreement. It should be noted that the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh has been expressing interest in establishing a Confucius Institute in Chittagong University. Chinese language education programs are already running in the CU Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
At the signing ceremony of the agreement held at the CU Vice Chancellor's office on Wednesday, a delegation of 4 members led by Liwen Yue, Counselor for Education and Cultural Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh paid a courtesy call on Chittagong University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shireen Akhta in his office. At that time, CU Pro VC (Academic) Prof. Benu Kumar Dey and Yang Hui, China Director of Dhaka University Confucius Institute, Ms Ma Xiaoyan, China Director of North South University Confucius Institute and Wu Qiu Dong, Chief Economist of China Confucius Construction Institute were present in the delegation.
Also CU Syndicate Member Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abul Manchur, Dean of Faculty of Arts and Humanities Prof. Dr. Mohammad Mahbubul Haque, Dean of CU Marine Sciences and Fisheries Faculty Prof. Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam, President of CU Teachers Association Prof. Dr. Mustafizur Rahman Siddiqui, CU Shah Jalal Hall Provost Professor Dr. Mohammad Jamal Uddin, CU Anthropology Department Professor Dr. Nasir Uddin, CU Registrar (Acting) KM Noor Ahmad and CU Chief Engineer (Acting) Syed Jahangir Fazal were present.
CU Vice-Chancellor called the Chinese Embassy's proposal to establish a Confucius Institute in CU as an expression of friendly relations, saying that China is one of the largest economically prosperous countries in the world. Apart from this, China is a development partner and friendly country of Bangladesh. Chinese language and culture are very rich. The establishment of the proposed Confucius Institute is very important to further strengthen the educational-research and cultural exchanges between China and Bangladesh and the friendly relations between the two countries. The proposed CU Confucius Institute Chinese Teaching Center will play an important role in the exchange of education-research and cultural activities for the teachers-students of Chittagong University to acquire proficiency in Chinese language.
