Greater Chattogram Transport Owners Sramik Oikya Parishad on Saturday called a 48-hour strike to meet four-point demands, including protesting road blockades and setting cars on fire in connection with the death of two students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
The strike will continue for 48 hours starting from 6:00 am Sunday (April 28).
The matter was confirmed by Manjurul Alam Chowdhury Manju, convenor of Greater Chattogram Transport Owners-Sramik Oikya Parishad and administrator of Hathajlzari Pourashava. At this time, the leaders of the Public Transport Owners Sramik Oikya Parishad were present.
Manjurul Alam Chowdhury said that two CUET students riding a motorcycle were killed in a road accident on the Chittagong-Kaptai road last Monday. After this incidence, the students had been protesting since that day by blocking the Chattogram-Kaptai road with 10-point demands. Three of our buses were burnt on the Chattogram-Kaptai road. The bus drivers, owners and workers of this route are being threatened continuously. A 48-hour transport strike has been called with a four-point demand. The demands include to stop plying of unfit vehicles on the roads and stop harassing arrests, burning vehicles and protesting anarchy on roads.
During this time, 120 bus routes in the three hill districts, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar districts will be closed. Various public transports including buses, minibuses and human haulers will be covered by the strike.
Meanwhile, the students of CUET are still protesting over the death of two students when they were hit by a bus on April 22.
As part of the movement, the students also locked the academic and administrative buildings of CUET last Thursday afternoon. After that, the authorities announced the closure of CUET for an indefinite period. Later on Friday, university authorities decided to close Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) until May 11.
However, students can stay in the hall during this period even if the academic activities are closed.
However, the agitated students have announced that they would continue the movement until their demands are met.
