Chattogram port, the gateway to the country’s economy, is in the Lloyd’s list of global container ports.

This year too, the country’s main sea port has retained the 67th position in the global list of container transport.

Lloyd’s List is a list of 100 ports of global container port management.

China’s Shanghai Port is at the top of Lloyd’s List while Singapore Port stands second. Seven of the top 10 ports in the list are from China. Chattogram Port of Bangladesh is at 67th position in this list.

Lloyd’s List, the world’s oldest shipping newspaper based in London, has published this list as the number of containers transported by different seaports in the world.

The list was published last week in a special publication titled ‘One Hundred Ports 2024’.

Chattogram sea port was ranked first in this list in 2009. In 2013, it was ranked 86th in the world in terms of container transport. At that time Bangladesh’s position was 98th. Chattogram port has been rising with time. This port was ranked 58th in the list published in 2020. The port authorities say that they are working with their full strength in keeping with the country’s economy.

However, users say that initiatives must be taken now to leverage the port’s infrastructure and geographic advantage to reap long-term benefits.

According to the publication of Lloyd’s List about the Port, 3 million 50 thousand 793 single containers have been transported in Chattogram Port in 2023. In 2022, this number was 31 lakh 42 thousand 504. As a result, container transportation has decreased by 2.9 percent in 2023 compared to 2022.

According to Chattogram port sources, container transport through the port decreased slightly in the outgoing year despite various global crises including import control in the country.

However, Chattogram port has retained its previous position in the global ranking, while many famous ports in the world have fallen behind.

Chattogram C&F Agents Association general secretary Kazi Mahmud Imam Bilu said, ‘one thing we have to keep in mind is that the countries that are next to us need our port. The government is not thinking about these issues as we have not been able to grow capacity that way. If we can make it, the transportation of goods from different countries can be one of the biggest factors in our GDP growth.’

According to Lloyd’s List, there will be around 690 million single containers transported in the world in 2023. Which is 0.8 percent more than in 2022. And at the same time, the container transport in Chattogram port has decreased by 2.9 percent. The port authorities say that they are working in harmony with the country’s economy.
