Chattogram port, a critical hub for Bangladesh's trade, is experiencing severe disruptions for the second consecutive day due to the nationwide non-cooperation movement following the fall of the Awami League-led government.
On Monday, port operations saw a dramatic drop in container clearance. Only 1,175 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) were processed, a stark decline from the typical daily clearance of 7,000–8,000 TEUs.
The slowdown has been attributed to the ongoing student-led protests and the political turmoil that has gripped the country.
While assessment activities for import-export goods have proceeded normally, the clearance process for imported goods has been significantly hindered.
The shipment of containers bound for Kamalapur Inland Container Depot has been particularly affected due to the suspension of railway waggon operations over the past two days.
Mohammad Fyzur Rahman, Commissioner of Chattogram Custom House, confirmed that customs officials continue their duties, but the volume of importers and agents present to retrieve their goods has decreased.
The situation at the port remains challenging as the nation grapples with the impact of the protests on economic activities.
