Chattogram district's Lohagara police station rescued 2 shy monkeys and 1 owl of endangered species. Meanwhile, four people have been sentenced to six months' imprisonment. A fine of five thousand rupees was imposed.
The operation was conducted in the area adjacent to Bara Aulia Degree College Gate of Lohagara Upazila on Friday afternoon.
The arrested are: Md Mubarak Hossain (27), Saddam Hossain (27), Md Mohiuddin (24) and Md Azahar Sikder (40).
It is known that under the direction of Superintendent of Police of Chattogram District SM Shafiullah, a team of police station led by Officer-in-Charge of Lohagara police station Muhammad Atiqur Rahman conducted a raid in front of Bar Aulia University under Lohagara police station on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway and searched 2 monkeys of endangered species on 2 motorcycles going from Alikadam in Bandarban to Pabna. And arrested 4 wildlife smugglers including 1 owl.
Lohagara Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Mohammad Shahjahan said that the detained persons admitted. These animals of endangered species were being taken for sale. The accused were handed over to Lohagara police station for sending to jail. The rare species were entrusted to Range Officer Md Mahmud Hossain for sending to Dulahazra Safari Park.
According to the Wildlife (Preservation and Security) Act, buying and selling and importing and exporting wild animals is a punishable offence. As per the law, each of the arrested persons was sentenced to 15 days' imprisonment with 6 months' and a fine of Tk 5000 as the accused pleaded guilty in the mobile court.
Lohagara Police Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Atiqur Rahman, SI Ruhul Amin, Chunti Range Officer Md. Mahmud Hossain were present in the operation.
