Cox’s Bazar admin takes all-out measures to tackle situation

DC urges landlords to waive rent amid coronavirus crisis, special arrangements taken for Rohingyas

Poor people of Cox’s Bazar who lost their jobs due to coronavirus spread, are being rendered with food items by the local administration and Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cox’s Bazar himself.  DC Mohammad Kamal Hossain is moving from town to village with food with the slogan “You stay home. We will deliver food to your house”.

Besides, various measures have been taken to prevent coronavirus. Control room has been opened, relief fund has been set up. In addition to keeping the town clean, disinfectant water is being sprayed. Special arrangements have been also taken to keep 11 lakh Rohingya safe in Cox's Bazar.

The same situation is prevalent in Cox's Bazar like all over the country due to the coronavirus spread. Road and air communication are closed. The army and navy personnel are patrolling the streets. They are not letting people get out of the house. 

As a result, poorer people have become unemployed and locked at home. The DC is taking food items including rice, pulses, onions and oil to the houses of these unemployed people. He started this relief distribution at the house of unemployed people at Lahar Para area adjacent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Upazila on Sunday afternoon.

DC Md Kamal Hossain said, an initiative has been taken to deliver food to poor unemployed people in 71 unions of Cox's Bazar. According to the him, food items were delivered to more than 600 families in last days.

He said that a list of these poor helpless people was being prepared and foods will be delivered to each person's house flowing the list. He requested these people not leave the house at the time.

Stating that there is enough relief to help the distressed people, the DC said that a relief fund has already been set up. Until the condition is normal the poor people will be given relief from the fund.

The Deputy Commissioner urged the landlords to excuse the tenant’s rent to reduce sufferings. At the same time, he ordered traders not to create artificial food crisis by storing food.

He also said that Cox's Bazar is a tourist district with more than 11 lakh Rohingya in 34 camps. Special measures have been taken to ensure that the Rohingyas do not face any problems due to the corona virus spread. The hospitals in the Rohingya camps have been kept ready for quarantine. Food and medical care items are being delivered to the camps.

Besides providing food, various steps have been taken to ensure the medical care of the people of Cox's Bazar district. Zila Sadar, Upazila Sadar and private hospitals and clinics have been directed to remain open 24 hours and it is being checked that the doctor do not face any problems.

The DC said, "As a human being, I have decided to stand beside people who have become unemployed due to corona virus spread." He also sought the cooperation of all, including the rich in doing this.
