COVID-19 vaccination program resumes in Dhaka

Covid-19 vaccination programme has resumed from Tuesday (January 23) in 9 centres of the capital Dhaka. The decision came following a recent surge in Covid-19 cases in many places of the city. 

On Wednesday ( January - 17), the directorate of health services issued a notice, signed by the Member Secretary of the Covid-19 Vaccine Management Task Force Dr Mohammad Nizam Uddin, regarding the directive to resume the vaccination programme.

During the vaccination programme in the centres, priority will be given to those health officials who are engaged in serving in the frontline, individuals aged 60 and above, those aged 18 and above with chronic diseases or poor immunity, and pregnant women.

In the initial phase, the activity of providing booster 3rd and 4th doses of Pfizer VCV vaccine has started in the centres of Dhaka city. 

The centres are - Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Kurmitola General Hospital, Sir Salimullah Medical College Midford Hospital, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, Mugda Medical College Hospital, Sheikh Russell National Gastroliver Institute and Hospital, Fulbaria Government Employees Hospital.

Vaccination is being done in some places of Dhaka North and South City Corporation area including Nose Ear and Throat Institute.

On Tuesday (January 23), Dr Mohammad Nizam Uddin said, “We have sent the required vaccines to the centres. Vaccination is going on.” He urged everyone to go to the concerned centres and get vaccinated. 

The notice issued also states that, even if there is no danger of spreading any new variant, the Health Directorate has given instructions for quick vaccination. After that, the COVID-19 vaccination programme will be conducted step by step through the distribution of vaccines to various specialized institutes and government hospitals of Dhaka, government medical college hospitals outside Dhaka and district-level hospitals. 

As proof of receipt for the 3rd and 4th dose vaccination, download the vaccination card from the Suraksha website or app and take it with you. 3rd and 4th dose vaccinations will be provided to the concerned centre with the name and date of the vaccine mentioned in the COVID–19 immunization card.

Also noted that the first coronavirus was detected in Bangladesh on March 8, 2020, and the vaccination programme began in January of the following year. At that time more than 25 crore doses of vaccination have already been given in the country. More than 11.5 million people have received two doses of the vaccine. 

The government was able to vaccinate millions of people within days through a mass vaccination program in collaboration with UNICEF, the World Health Organization and other partners. Under this campaign held in February 2022, some 1 crore 7 million people were vaccinated.
