BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the interim government to complete reforms quickly and hold elections, which are the only path to restoring democracy.
He said patience is needed to allow the interim government to complete the reform processes. Besides, all issues should be resolved through discussion, not politics.
He made these remarks on Tuesday during the inauguration ceremony of the Shaheed Zia Memorial Tournament in Barabari, Lalmonirhat, where he was the chief guest.
Mirza Fakhrul urged the current government to avoid appointing controversial figures as advisers.
“The head of this government is a globally respected figure. We must remember that the opportunity created by a student-led mass uprising to rebuild the state should not be wasted. If we lose this chance, it could jeopardize our national existence,” he added.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “This government has come at a critical moment through a movement of students and the public. We, too, need to be tolerant so that the government can carry out all reforms in an orderly and disciplined manner.”
He further stated that the fascist Awami League government had brought every sector to the brink of destruction through corruption and irregularities. Thus, rapid reforms are not possible. If given reasonable time, reforms will be complete.
The past fascist Awami League government constantly conspired, oppressed, and persecuted BNP to destroy it. This Awami League has filed false cases against nearly 60 lakh people and disappeared around 700 individuals. They aimed to establish fascism and one-party rule by abducting and killing thousands.
The BNP Secretary General said that the market has gone out of control. The government must work to regulate the market. However, all issues will be resolved once an elected government comes to power. For this, elections and reforms are needed.
Mirza Fakhrul also said “On August 5, 2024, dominance was defeated for the second time through a student and public uprising, and fascists were overthrown. Today, we have pledged to stand with the people to resist dominance. If needed, we will build a strong movement for this.”
“We repeatedly speak of elections because we believe no reform initiative can succeed without active public participation. Such participation is only possible through an elected parliament,” he added.
The football tournament organised by the Lalmonirhat District BNP started in 2015. This is the sixth tournament. Football teams from eight districts in the Rangpur Division, Rangpur Metropolitan, and the Syedpur Political District BNP are participating in this tournament.
Lalmonirhat District BNP President and Central Organisational Secretary Asadul Habib Dulu presided over the opening ceremony.
Bangladesh Football Federation President Tabith Awal, former captain of the Bangladesh National Football Team, and BNP Dhaka Metropolitan North Convener Aminul Islam, along with other central leaders, were also present.
