Rising commodity prices have become a regular trend in the capital’s kitchen markets, resulting in the increased sufferings, mainly of the middle income people, with no chances of any price reductions in sight.
Prices of rice, pulses, flour, eggs, vegetables and chicken have gone up in the market. On visiting the capital’s different kitchen markets, such price variations were found by this reporter.
Prices of vegetables have gone up in the market. Cucumber is being sold at Tk 60 per kg, eggplant at Tk 60, tomatoes at Tk 60, bitter gourd at Tk 60 per kg, carrot at Tk 120, gourd at Tk 50 per piece, per piece gourd at Tk 60, pumpkin at Tk 40 per kg, snake gourd at Tk 60 per kg, pointed gourd at Tk 50 per kg, okra at Tk 50 per kg, radish is at Tk 40 per kg, papaya at Tk 40 per kg, yardlong bean at Tk 60 and peas Tk 160 per kg, green chili at Tk 130 per kg, potato at Tk 20.
Karwan Bazar kitchen market trader Amin said that as the flood situation was worsening in the country, vegetable supply against the demand was low. Fresh vegetable cost hence is going up.

Besides, onion is Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg, China garlic is Tk 150 to Tk 160 per kg while local garlic is Tk 100 per kg, ginger is Tk 80, loose sugar is Tk 80 to Tk 85 per kg, local lentil is Tk 130 to Tk 140 per kg, and loose flour is Tk 50.
Yosuf Traders proprietor Yosuf told this reporter that as the lentil import from India and flour import were stumbling, prices of these goods have gone up.
A consumer in the same market told this reporter that their income is not increasing but the prices of essential commodities are increasing. They are not able to continue with their low income.
The price of chicken has increased in the market. Broiler chickens are being sold at Tk 160 to Tk 180 per kg. Sonali chicken is being sold at Tk 300 to Tk 310 per kg. Per kg beef is selling at Tk 700, mutton is being sold at Tk 900 per kg.
At the rice market, it has been found that Minikat rice is being sold at Tk 65 to Tk 66 per kg, Atash rice is being sold at Tk 50, Nazirshail is Tk 70 to Tk 75.
Rice traders are saying that as the government procurement of paddy and rice is going on, it has affected the rice market and there are also rice traders who are stockpiling rice illegally.
