A culvert on an important road in Sangaon village of Duosuo union under Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon collapsed and turned into a death trap some time ago.
Although the culvert on that road collapsed creating a big hole in the middle of the culvert about four months ago, no steps have been taken to renovate the culvert yet. As a result, minor accidents are happening all the time on the damaged culvert.
According to locals, people from 10 nearby villages including Daugachhi, Kuatol, Bargharia and Chowrangi regularly use the road in front of the house of Azim Uddin, a former UP member from Sangaon in Baliadangi upazila.
Due to this the collapse, the movement of larger vehicles except bicycles and motorcycles has been stopped on that road. In the dark of night, strangers are getting into accidents while moving on the road.
According to the locals, the local engineering department and the union council have been informed about the suffering for the last four months but no remedy has been found. Not only the remedy, so far no official or public representative has visited the spot.
It is learned that more than two thousand people of the area travelled to Kalomegh, Baliadangi, Chowrangi and Lahiri markets every day using the road. Since the culvert collapsed, locals have had to walk about 10 kilometers to reach these markets.
Local UP member Mashiur Rahman said people plying on the road are getting into accidents every night. A young man from Sangaon village and an old man from Paharbhanga village fell into a pit at night and broke their motorcycle, injuring themselves. I called the local engineer more than once but got no good answer. He demanded immediate repair of the culvert.
Mohammad Ullah Raihan Dulu, president of the Volunteer Independent Social Welfare Council, said locals had repaired it with bamboo, including pulling red cloth to warn pedestrians from falling into the pits, but they collapsed again in two days. There is a risk of a major accident at any time if the culvert is not repaired quickly.
Baliadangi Upazila Engineer Mainul Islam said that no one informed me about the matter. I heard from you. He sent an assistant and assured him of speedy reform.
