The cold spell across the country has begun to bite following light rain and drizzle.
Meteorologists have said that the severity of cold would intensify in the next few days. However, an abrupt drop in temperature leading to a cold wave has been crippling normal life in some parts of the country including Sylhet since Monday.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Tuesday (December 27) predicted light rain or drizzle at one or two places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions on Wednesday.
‘Light rain or drizzle is likely to occur at one or two places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. Weather may remain mainly dry with partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country,’ said a BMD bulletin.
Besides, moderate to thick fog may occur at some places over the river basins and light to moderate fog may occur elsewhere across the country from late night to tomorrow morning, it added.
Night temperature may remain nearly unchanged and day temperature may fall slightly in the country.
The country’s highest temperature on Monday was recorded 31.3 degree Celsius at Khepupara of Barishal division and lowest temperature on Tuesday was recorded 10.7 degrees Celsius at Tetulia of Rangpur division.
However, a cold wave is sweeping Sylhet region and it may continue, hampering normal life in Sylhet city and district and adjacent areas.
Normal work was badly affected in Sylhet following the cold wave. Fewer people were found out of their homes due to shivering cold and public places, hats, bazaars, bus stands, and other places looked almost deserted.
Sufferings of daily wage earners like day labourers, rickshaw pullers and farm labourers have been intensified due to biting cold in Sylhet region.
The number of patients suffering from cough, fever, asthma and other acute respiratory tract infections sharply increased at different hospitals including Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital for the last couple of days.
